Maggie's Penguin Parade

Maggie’s Penguin Parade – a sneaky peek at the Michelin penguin!

As you know we have sponsored a penguin as part of Maggie’s Penguin Parade that will see colourful sculptures appear in locations in and around Dundee later this month (29 June) with the trail open until September when there will be an auction.

Our penguin design is a secret but our artist Judi Milne has given us a sneaky peek:  Judi has been working with Amy Lorimer, a pupil from Braeview Academy, on our sculpture. Amy can be seen busy at work here when the sculpture was being painted:

Amy, 17, who is considering taking her art career further and perhaps teaching the subject one day thought the opportunity to paint a penguin was amazing, adding: “The project is so cool, and something I have always wanted to do.

“It was so nice to be in a room with people who have the same passion for art as I do and getting tips. It has been fantastic working with Judi too and learning about all of her experiences.”

Art teacher Jill MacFarlane said: “Amy was an obvious choice to be involved in this project as is very talented.

“She was over-the-moon to be involved in the project and as an artist to have art work on display so publically is fantastic. We are really proud of her.”

Artist Judi Milne said: “It’s been fantastic working on another public art project and the penguin was really fun to paint.

“Maggie’s in particular holds a special place in my heart, my friend Claire received great support from Maggie’s when she was diagnosed with terminal bowel cancer, she was a very special lady and loved all things colourful and nature, so this inspired the initial idea of making my penguin as colourful as possible, I think I achieved this, prepare to wear your shades!

“I was really excited when asked to do a joint project with Amy, as a professional artist for over 20 years, it’s really exciting to see a new generation emerging and Amy is super talented!

“It’s clear to see that she is passionate about art, as she was very easy to work with and just got on with it and really put her own stamp on ‘4seasons’ too, with very little guidance from me really.

“I’ve worked on a few public art projects but I’ve particularly enjoyed this one, giving me time to reflect on my fun friend, who I know would have adored it and getting the opportunity to work with Amy too, who I believe will have a great future as an artist, it was great to see the support she received from her art teacher at Braeview Academy too.”

Judi started a career in graphic design but, after nine years of office life, decided to try something new and landed an apprenticeship in tattooing, funding herself through by freelance cartooning, during this time, she became the first female artist to work for The Dandy.

Tattooing soon became a full time career and in 2002 she opened the now multi award winning, Ink Minx Tattoos in Montrose.

As an animal and nature lover, she finds most of her inspiration in the great outdoors. Over the last four years she has enjoyed taking part in many public art projects and now her latest is a penguin sponsored by Michelin, painted in collaboration with a pupil from Braeview Academy.

Maggie’s Penguin Parade will launch on June 29 across Dundee and the surrounding region with a trail of 80 individually designed and beautifully decorated giant penguin sculptures.

Look out for the Michelin penguin soon!
