CurriculumFirst and Second Year There is little doubt that one of the most difficult times during a young person's life is the change from primary to secondary school. At the start of their secondary education, pupils can have many problems to face, such as a change of school; many teachers instead of a single class teacher; new subjects to be undertaken. S1 pupils are allocated to mixed ability register classes of approx 25 with care being taken to ensure, that as far as possible, there is a representation from each of our associated Primaries in each class. For "practical" subjects e.g. Science, Home Economics, Art and Music, pupils are allocated to groups of no more than 20. In the core subjects of English, Maths, Science, Social Subjects and Modern Languages pupils are grouped in classes according to the information provided by the Primary school. Most pupils in S1 and S2 follow the same "Common Course" which includes English, Maths, a Modern European Language, Science, Social Subjects, Home Economics, Computing, Art, Music, Physical Education, Humanities and Social Education. Any alteration to this would be discussed with parent/guardian first and would be indicated by needs of the child that were not being met. To improve levels of attainment we have reduced the number of different teachers the pupils see in a week and increased the amount of time they spend in the core subjects of Maths, English, Science, Social Subjects and Modern Languages. Third and Fourth Year At this stage, pupils make the transition from the broad curriculum of S1/S2 to a more individual course which offers a degree of choice of subject and level. A copy of the current S3 Course Choice form is given in the appendices. Pupils are now able to study up to 8 courses - either Standard Grades or National Qualifications at Access or Intermediate levels. The subjects and levels offered are in line with national guidance and will be tailored to suit the needs of each learner. If a pupil shows a particular aptitude e.g. in computing or music, fast tracking to Higher is a possibility in negotiation with the school. Fifth and Sixth Year In S5/6 a wide range of subjects at different levels is offered and pupils can select the appropriate combination for their individual needs. Detailed information is made available to pupils well in advance and individual guidance is given to ensure that the most appropriate course choice is made. A copy of the current Course Choice form is given in the appendices. Pupils are able to study up to 5 Highers or 5 National Qualification courses.
