Accidents or Illness in School
A pupil who hurts him or herself, or feels ill in school, should report this to the teacher in charge of the class. If necessary, the pupil will be referred to the school auxiliary for treatment. If the injury warrants it, the pupil will be taken to hospital and you will be informed immediately. In most cases, the Auxiliary will keep you informed of any contact she has with your child. It is very important for you to give an emergency contact for use on occasions when you cannot be contacted. This information is requested along with other basic information at the beginning of each session. If a pupil is unwell and needs to be sent home we will contact you first. For safety reasons, no pupils should leave school without the permission of a Guidance teacher or Senior member of staff. Parents should also notify the The Head Teacher, in confidence, of any feature of their child's health which might adversely affect his or her work or behaviour. It is particularly important that the school is aware of circumstances affecting any pupil who requires regular medication during the school day.
Health and Medical Care
A programme of health care is available for all pupils. A Healthcare Team of a doctor and nurses is associated with Braeview Academy and pupils are offered the following immunisations, subject to your consent: in S2 - all pupils are offered a BCG (tuberculosis) test in S3 - all pupils are currently offered a booster immunisation for diptheria, tetanus and polio. School health nurses are available to give information and advice on health issues at the weekly W.E.L.L. drop-in, which is open to all pupils – usually at lunch time. The school Healthcare Team is based at the Whitfield Clinic and can be contacted by telephone at Dundee 501189
Dental and Medical Appointments
If a pupil is required to attend a medical or dental appointment during the day, the appointment card should be brought to school for signature by a member of the Guidance staff. The signed card should be presented at the front office and an "Out of School Pass" will be issued. Pupils are expected to return to school immediately after the appointment.
Insurance
The Education Authority insures against its legal liability for:
• Accidental personal injury and
• Loss or damage to property of third parties
You are advised that no insurance cover is maintained for circumstances in which the Council does not have a legal liability. You may wish to consider your own insurance arrangements.
Child Protection
Given ongoing public concern about the subject of child abuse and recent changes in the law, schools are now required to report if it is thought any child has come to harm as a consequence of abuse.
A member of staff in each school has been appointed to be responsible for Child protection matters and receives special training.
In Braeview Acdemy that person is Miss Grubb as Designated Officer, Child Protection. Should you wish to talk further about child protection and the safety of children please feel free to contact the school.
The school has strong links with the School Medical Officers, Social Workers and Police, any or all of whom may become involved if abuse is suspected.
We will always ensure that you are informed and participate in any action which we may take your child.
The Scottish Executive has agreed a Children’s Charter, which sets out what children can expect of all professionals working to keep them safe, and how the professionals will go about helping to protect them. Every child/family, in nursery, primary and secondary schools, receives a copy of the Charter.
Resolving Difficulties
Almost all difficulties should be able to be resolved by discussion with the school. If you have a concern affecting your child, you should contact the school in the first instance and this will be addressed by the appropriate member of staff. If the situation is not resolved to your satisfaction you should ask to speak to the Head Teacher.
The Education Department has issued guidelines to all schools on how to deal with parental concerns.
